The term visa is a shortening of a Latin phrase, carta visa, meaning the document has been seen. Visas take a considerable number of forms, starting from visitor visas to immigration visas, and each sort of visa has its own application process.

For example, somebody who would like to enter a country to do business would need to sign up for a business visa, while someone that intended to switch to a country would make an application for an immigration visa which would permit them to enter the country and stay there for a set time period while chasing citizenship or residency authorizes. Visas often expire after a set time period. In a few cases, a visa may be expanded by authorization, while in other examples, people need to leave a country and re-enter it to get a new visa.
